Why the K

A creature is a living thing that has not been named.

It is the word we reach for at the edge of the map, in deep water, in the part of the forest nobody has walked. We use it when we can see that something is alive and we cannot yet say what it is.

I did not choose it for the animals. I chose it for us. And I spelled it with a K because I meant it on purpose.

We are strange to other people. We are stranger to ourselves.

Most of us are carrying something nobody handed us and nobody can quite describe. We mutate. The woman I was at thirty is not the one writing this, and the one I am becoming has not arrived yet and does not send letters ahead.

There is a monster in me. I have stopped apologising for it. It is not a fault in the machine, it is part of the animal, and every honest person I have ever admired has one.

The recognition

I cannot define myself. Some days I cannot find myself. I do not know who I could be, or where I am supposed to be standing, or what any of this is finally for.

And I am here anyway.

That is the whole of it. Not a resolution, not a breakthrough, not the afternoon when everything finally made sense. Only the plain and unreasonable fact that I exist while remaining unfinished, unnamed and unexplained, to everyone else and to myself.

At some point I stopped waiting to be defined before I was allowed to begin.

What that has to do with a company

Because the people who cannot be easily named are usually the same people carrying everything alone.

You are the final answer for everything in your world. You are the strategy, the operations, the calendar, the money, the mood of the room, and the last decision on all of it. You are competent in a way that has become a trap, because competence is the reason nobody asks whether you are all right.

And underneath that, quietly, is the harder thing. You have lost the thread of where you were going. Not the ability. The thread.

What we will not do

We will not tell you who you are.

There is an entire industry built on handing people a description of themselves and charging for the relief. We are not in it. Nobody names a creature from the outside, and anyone who offers to is selling you a smaller life than the one you have.

We will not improve you. You are not a draft.

What we do instead

We take the mechanics. The tracking, the deciding what matters, the remembering, the sequencing, the things that were never the point and have been eating the whole day. We hold the picture with you and we think ahead of you, so that when the important decision arrives you meet it with a clear head instead of at eleven at night with nothing left.

We do not do it for you. You are the one living this. We are the one beside you, so that the room is quiet enough for you to hear yourself think, and wide enough for you to find out what you are.

You will still be undefined. That was never the problem.

You will simply have the room to become whatever this turns out to be.

Wherever you take this
